Wyden Statement on Japanese Promise to Contribute to Tsunami Debris Cleanup

Washington, D.C. – U. S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) issued the following statement after the Japanese government agreed to contribute $5 million to clean up tsunami debris washing up on the west coast of the United States.

“For the nation of Japan to offer to contribute funds to America’s effort to protect our shores from tsunami debris that devastated their nation is a sign of the deep friendship between our two nations.  Japan is still recovering from this terrible disaster, and will be for many more years. Tsunami debris poses a threat to Oregon’s economy and ecology, but it still pales in comparison to the devastation Japan suffered from the earthquake and tsunami.  I am humbled and very grateful for this offer of assistance.”
