Judicial Selection Committee Recommends Five Finalists for Two Federal Judgeships

Portland, OR - Senator Ron Wyden announced today that a federal judicial selection committee has recommended five finalists to fill two federal district court judgeships for Oregon. Wyden will forward those five names to the White House. Wyden will interview them in August.

"I thank the selection committee for their hard work and recommendations," said Wyden. "Their efforts are critical to the wise administration of justice in our state, and their contributions will be felt for many years to come."

The five finalists are:

  • Oregon Supreme Court Justice Thomas Balmer
  • Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Henry Kantor
  • Lane County Circuit Court Judge Karsten Rasmussen
  • Attorney Michael Simon
  • Federal Public Defender Steven Wax

The names were recommended to Wyden by a 13-member selection committee appointed in April by Wyden and Senator Jeff Merkley to find replacements for two federal judges who are taking senior status, Judge Ancer Haggerty and Judge Garr M. King, both of the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon.
