Wyden Joins Bipartisan Legislation to Protect Small Businesses from Trump Tariffs on Canada

Senator: “I heard firsthand from farmers, ranchers and others at my five open-to-all town halls this past weekend in Eastern Oregon as well as in other community conversations just how devastating this Trump tariff uncertainty has been”

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today announced he has joined his colleagues in the Senate to introduce legislation that would exempt United States-owned small businesses from tariffs imposed on Canada.

“Trump’s Canada tariffs don’t make sense for ANYONE, but especially not for American small businesses. Taxes on products from Canada means small businesses in America will pay more for the inputs they use to make things here in the United States – meaning prices will go up, jobs will be lost and small companies will shut down,” Wyden said. “This is a commonsense bill to exempt small businesses from Trump trade taxes and cushion some of the blow of his senseless trade war with Canada.”

Donald Trump has changed or modified his tariff proposals and policies dozens of times in his second term. These tariffs have been difficult to navigate for small businesses across the United States—especially in Oregon, where Canada is among the state’s largest trading partners. Tariffs lead to supply chain disruptions, increased costs of goods and materials, smaller profits and higher costs for consumers.

“I heard firsthand from farmers, ranchers and others at my five open-to-all town halls this past weekend in Eastern Oregon as well as in other community conversations just how devastating this Trump tariff uncertainty has been,” Wyden said. “Trump’s zigzagging trade policy is producing real harm in our state, and this legislation would help put a stop to his needless whipsawing of Oregon small businesses trading with Canada.”

The Creating Access to Necessary American-Canadian Duty Adjustments (CANADA) Act is endorsed by Main Street Alliance and Small Business Majority.

In addition to Wyden, the bill was introduced by U.S. Senator Peter Welch D-Vt., and cosponsored by U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer D-N.Y., Jeanne Shaheen D-N.H., Lisa Murkowski R-Alaska, Tim Kaine D-Va., Susan Collins R-Maine, and Edward J. Markey D-Mass.

Wyden has been a leader in the Senate on combating Donald Trump’s disastrous trade agenda. In April, he introduced a bipartisan resolution that would terminate Trump’s trade emergency and repeal his tariffs. In July, he headed a bipartisan Senate delegation to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to discuss the importance of cooperation on economic and trade issues. Also in July, Wyden authored a letter to the U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer asserting Congress’s constitutional authority to regulate tariffs and that any trade deal must come before Congress for approval.
