Wyden Statement on Start of Columbia River Treaty Negotiations

Washington, D.C. – Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of State announced the United States will begin negotiations with Canada to update the Columbia River Treaty, which links the Canadian and American governments in management of the Columbia River system:

"I have been pushing the State Department for years to open talks with Canada to modernize the Columbia River Treaty, and I’m glad the department is beginning these negotiations,” Wyden said. “The Columbia River is the lifeblood of our region, and our communities depend on it for healthy fish and wildlife, transportation, affordable power and economic stability. I’m hopeful these talks will prove fruitful in the effort to make the Columbia River Treaty a better deal for Oregonians and the Pacific Northwest.”
