Wyden, National Guard to Host Job Fairs for Returning Soldiers in the Portland Metro Area, Central Oregon, Southern Oregon and the Willamette Valley

Portland, OR – Recognizing the high unemployment rate among National Guard soldiers returning from Iraq, Oregon Senator Ron Wyden is joining forces with the Oregon Military Department to host four job fairs that will match employers who have jobs with soldiers who need them.

The Yellow Ribbon Career and Benefit Fairs will be held at the following locations:

  • Portland Metro Area, Saturday, June 26, Clackamas Community College, Oregon City.
  • Central Oregon, Saturday, July 10, Deschutes County Fairgrounds, Redmond.
  • Southern Oregon, Sunday, July 11, Crater High School, Central Point
  • Eugene/Springfield, Saturday, August 7, Regional Sports Center, Springfield.

“Nearly half of the 3,000 members of the Oregon National Guard’s 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team who returned this spring from a one-year combat deployment in Iraq did not have a job to home to,” Wyden said. “We can do something about that. I would greatly appreciate the participation of any and all Oregon employers who have or anticipate having jobs and are looking for good employees.”

“These job fairs are an important part of the Guard’s efforts to make sure that Guard members and their spouses get the job opportunities and other benefits they have earned and deserved as members of the American military,” said Maj. Gen. Fred Rees, adjutant general of the Oregon National Guard. “

Any employer interested in more details or in attending any or all of these job fairs can call Barbara Smith Warner in Senator Wyden’s Portland office at 503-326-7543. Employers can also contact the Oregon Military Department about attending the job fairs and about placing job information on the Department’s website at 503-584-2389 or 503-584-2393. Employers can also fax information to 503-584-2274.
